The present paper analyses, from semantic and structural points of view, the nicknames/bynames from Vadu Izei, Maramureș county. Our objective is to highlight the principles that underlie the personal denomination and the dynamics of anthroponymy in the researched community. The corpus of the paper was extracted from the monograph Vadu Izei: identity card, signed by Ioan Borlean (2020). For a diachronic view on the popular denominative system in Vadu Izei, the current nicknames/bynames were compared with the material extracted from the answers to Chestionarul IV. Nume de loc și nume de persoană Questionnaire IV. Name of place and name of person, 1930 (from Chestionarele Muzeului Limbii Române Questionnaires of the Museum of Romanian Language, indirect surveys by correspondence, carried out between 1922–1936), completed by the teacher Teodor Utan.
