In the face of persistent skills gaps in the workforce, this article explores the discrepancy between educators' and employers' perceptions of job readiness and underscores the pivotal role of English language educators in bridging this gap. By categorising essential skills into language proficiency and soft skills, the article advocates for a curriculum shift towards a more functional approach, integrating these competencies to better prepare students for the evolving demands of tthe workplace.
