Abstract Inherently safer design (ISD) principles have revolutionized safety management in the petroleum industry by integrating safety into the design process. This paper explores several success stories where ISD principles have been effectively implemented, resulting in significant safety improvements and operational efficiencies. The case studies highlight the application of ISD in various stages of petroleum operations, from exploration to refining, demonstrating the tangible benefits of this proactive approach such as improved process and personal safety, reduced production loss, reduced capital/investment cost, and reduced overall life cycle cost.
