Education is one of the most powerful instruments for social transformation, and the empowerment of women through education has long been recognized as a critical factor for national progress. Despite India’s significant strides in female literacy over the past decade, deep-rooted socio-cultural, economic, and structural barriers continue to hinder equitable access to education for women. This paper explores the current scenario of women’s education in India, analyzes trends in literacy, highlights state-wise disparities, identifies underlying causes of low literacy rates, and evaluates government as well as non-governmental interventions. The study further suggests strategies to enhance literacy and promote women’s empowerment through education
