The article reveals aspects of forming motivation among senior students through physical education to defend Ukraine. Formation of motivation to engage in physical education should become the foundation for preparing young students for vitality. The purpose of the article is to investigate the effectiveness of forming motivation to defend Ukraine through physical education of senior school students on the success of their studies in physical culture. It is proved that society needs a self-sufficient individual who is able to understand his role in the activities of the state and be patriotically, physically and morally ready to defend it. A high level of motivation was shown by students who are deeply aware of the value of physical education classes, have a constant need for physical activity, are aimed at physical improvement, have a goal and desire to achieve it. Students in grades 10–11 with a high level of motivation during the school year significantly improved their performance by 9.2 and 9.8 points (P 0.05). It has been established that the level of motivation of students significantly affects the quality of knowledge, skills and abilities in physical education, which positively affects the dynamics of students' success during the academic year. Improving the physical education of older students in secondary education institutions is also important for preparing students for service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and protecting the sovereignty of the state. Motivation for physical education lessons is a complex of student motives, which is focused on achieving a high level of physical fitness and working capacity of the student.
