Abstract This small piece on Edward Hamley grew out of one of scholar Graham Handley’s many conversations with Kathleen Tillotson over the years from 1957 onward. Tillotson often mentioned names or incidents from the George Eliot letters or essays, which might have some relevance to a fuller consideration of the work of George Henry Lewes or George Eliot. And Handley felt that Hamley, even on this limited view, merited recognition in his own right and was evidence of the Lewes’ cultural and humanitarian reach. This article explores Hamley’s life and accomplishments.
