We surveyed 685 women police officers from the United States to understand how promotional processes affect their career advancement. Promotional processes varied widely. Most agencies use a combination of written examinations, interviews, assessment centers, and career portfolios. Promotional exam format did not impact women’s career advancement, but age and education did. Agencies should consider whether incentive structures that reward seniority and education disadvantage women.
