This paper analyzes the evolution of the Romanian urban system and its urban-rural interfaces during the transition and post-transition periods, focusing on the demographic shifts between 1992 and 2022. Using data from the Romanian National Institute of Statistics and a rank-size analysis, the study identifies patterns of population growth, decline, and redistribution at various spatial scales, including cities and their surrounding rural areas. The analysis highlights significant trends, such as urban shrinkage in small industrial cities and suburbanization around larger urban centers, while examining how these changes have reshaped the national urban hierarchy. The study also evaluates the impact of policy interventions, economic transitions, and geographical factors on urban dynamics. The findings provide a foundation for local authorities to better understand migration trends and inform policy decisions that promote equitable urban development.
