In modern conditions, the rapid development of urban areas is evident, but also the accelerated fl ow of external challenges, among which are drastic climate changes, growing population and unsatisfactory infrastructure. In light of the aforementioned trends, the concept of smart cities is becoming increasingly important for achieving sustainable urban development. The concept of smart cities represents the integration of modern technologies in urban environments in order to improve the quality of life, efficient management of resources and sustainable development. Therefore, smart cities use modern technologies to improve the quality of life of citizens, optimize resources and contribute to environmental protection. Smart solutions for cities start from the creation of smart infrastructure and the sustainable disposal of available resources that are available in the immediate environment of the city, as a potential that is currently underutilized. The concept of smart cities, which implies anticipating development trends in all areas that affect life in cities, along with the development of innovative solutions that will adapt to these trends and make them easier to use for the population and the city economy. The implementation of the concept of smart cities should include all units of the urban area and coexistence and all participants of local development. At the same time, it should be ensured that the mentioned concept, as well as its benefits, are aimed equally at all citizens. This paper explores the concept of a smart city, analyzes global trends in implementation, primarily with special reference to the state and perspectives of development in Serbia. Through best practice examples and challenges faced by cities around the world, the role of smart solutions in modern urban planning is discussed. The research results show that the application of the concept of smart cities is recognized, that some cities have already joined the process of implementing components of smart cities.
