The research aims to determine the methodological features of the qualification of transitional phenomena in the field of parts of speech in modern Russian studies. The scientific novelty of the work consists in the fact that, for the first time, the main methodological features of transitional linguistic phenomena in modern Russian studies are identified and systematized. It is substantiated that the exclusive use of a function-centric approach does not reveal the entire dynamics and complexity of transitional processes in the system of parts of speech. A refined and expanded definition of the concept of functive is proposed as a general methodological tool for describing transitivity, which allows us to reinterpret the boundaries and structure of transitional phenomena. The research findings showed that function-centric qualifications, which prevail in domestic morphology, often record only situational speech changes and particular functional variants of the lexeme, while system-centric theories, which have great explanatory power, are located on the morphological periphery. The article critically analyzes the dominant functional approach to the classification of transitional linguistic phenomena, pointing out its shortcomings – ignoring system invariants and blurring morphological boundaries. In contrast, a system-centric approach is proposed, which allows for a clear separation of word-formation processes and functional variation.
