The article examines the influence of the geometric configuration of the surface shape of a virtual source on the example of the technological process of opening a trench with a single-bucket excavator. Spatial 3D models of emerging virtual surfaces during the operation cycle of a single-bucket excavator are shown. The constructed combination of virtual source surfaces is vividly illustrated by the working planes through which the dust particles pass. The research presented in this article will allow engineers to determine and refine the initial and boundary conditions for calculating the level of pollution during operation of single-bucket excavators, as well as make decisions on choosing the most optimal methods of combating air pollution at the workplace of the equipment. To determine the parameters of the virtual source surfaces, numerous field studies and measurements were carried out under construction site conditions
