documentary assessment An historic environment desk-based assessment was carried out during January and February 2023 at 14 Priory Road, Alcester, Warwickshire, to support a planning application for a rear extension. The assessment concluded that there are a broad date-range of archaeological monuments and deposits close to the site including a high probability of Roman remains related to the C1-C2 extra-mural settlement to the south and west of the walled town. The assessment has shown that there is moderate to high potential for Roman and medieval remains to lie within the site with an emphasis on the Roman period. The site lies in a roughly triangular area to the south and west of the Roman walled town of Alauna that is related to the C1-C2 extra-mural settlement where conditions were more favourable for occupation as it expanded outside the walled town. The 1757 map shows a former U-shaped building of unknown function occupying part of the site at the rear of the existing property. Two further small, detached buildings lie to the north. This group of buildings appear to mark the first modern development of the triangular area. The impact of the proposed development is likely to results from the construction of the foundations for the new extension, and any associated drainage and services. In conclusion, the assessment recommended that a field investigation is to be undertaken in the form of trial trenching to establish the archaeological potential of the site and the need if any, for further mitigation in advance of or during the proposed development.
