This technical note introduces Glyphstream, a formally constrained structural compression protocol designed to preserve continuity in complex, long-running cognitive and knowledge-intensive systems. Glyphstream addresses a recurring failure mode in modern knowledge work: as projects extend across time, sessions, and collaborators, continuity degrades not because content is lost, but because structural orientation collapses. Conventional approaches such as summaries, notes, transcripts, or version histories preserve narrative detail but often fail to preserve system shape, decision topology, workflow logic, and operational constraints. Glyphstream responds to this gap by explicitly encoding structure rather than semantics. The protocol operates as a non-semantic, lossy structural compression method. It intentionally discards narrative, emotional tone, and content detail, while preserving only those elements required to re-establish orientation and continue work coherently. A Glyphstream records the shape of a system, not its story. Formally, a Glyphstream output is a bounded schema composed of enumerated structural categories, such as topic nodes, theory clusters, workflow paths, decision branches, tone constraints, legal or authorship boundaries, memory arcs, and persistent system behaviours. The protocol enforces strict exclusion rules to prevent interpretive drift, symbolic expansion, or accidental reintroduction of narrative content. Glyphstream is not designed for first-contact communication, instruction, or explanation. It is intended as an intermediary continuity artefact, reconstructed by a domain-informed user or system in conjunction with external documentation or archived material. This separation between compression and reconstruction is a core design invariant. The method is particularly applicable to: long-form research and theory development, AI-assisted knowledge work, technical, legal, or architectural projects with extended timelines, systems where emotional or narrative accumulation destabilises operational clarity, continuity handover between sessions, collaborators, or tools. This paper provides a formal specification of the protocol, outlines its invariants and exclusion rules, situates it relative to existing methods (such as summaries, mind maps, and version control), and clearly defines its limitations and ethical boundaries. Glyphstream is presented as a tool, not a language, not a meaning-making system, and not a metaphysical framework. The protocol is positioned within the broader Atlas Codex as a continuity-preserving method for high-density cognitive systems, while remaining fully usable as a standalone technique.
