The rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT has sparked both enthusiasm and concern in higher education. This systematic literature review analyzes 53 recent studies on the impact of generative AI, focusing on academic integrity, assessment redesign, AI literacy, institutional policy, and ethical considerations. Following PRISMA guidelines, we covered publications from 2023 to 2025, leading to a thematic synthesis of challenges and strategies. Key challenges include increased risks of plagiarism and cheating, difficulties in detecting AI-generated content, diminished critical thinking skills among students, and ambiguous issues regarding authorship and intellectual honesty. In response, educators are exploring new assessment methods, promoting AI literacy, and developing clear institutional policies. Ethical considerations highlight fairness, transparency, and responsible AI integration. This report includes summary tables of common challenges and solutions identified in the literature. Overall, the studies advocate for a balanced approach that leverages AI's educational benefits while maintaining academic integrity. We also discuss practical implications for educators, note limitations in current research, and outline areas for future exploration. Our findings offer timely guidance for institutions adapting to the evolving AI landscape in education. Keywords—Generative AI, Large language model, ChatGPT, Artificial Intelligence, Education, Ethics, AI literacy, Assessment redesign.
