This article, published in the REAL Series (a monthly industry research and policy insight publication by REAL Initiative), examines the role of alternative building materials in advancing sustainable community development in Nigeria. Drawing on expert interviews with industry leaders, including Engr. Abdulhakeem Huthman of Hydraform Nigeria and Engr. Prof. Samson Duna of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), the publication analyzes the environmental, economic, and social sustainability benefits of Stabilized Compressed Earth Blocks (SCEBs) and related materials. The article explores how low-carbon construction technologies can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve thermal performance, stimulate local economic activity, enhance indoor air quality, and lower overall building costs. It contributes to ongoing policy and industry discourse on climate-responsive housing solutions and sustainable infrastructure development in emerging economies.
