Purely deterministic systems cannot produce consciousness. This is not "currently infeasible"; it is "structurally impossible." This paper argues for this impossibility theorem via the chain: consciousness requires negation → negation requires remainder → remainder requires true randomness accumulated over structured time → purely deterministic systems have no true randomness → product is zero → no consciousness. The necessary condition for consciousness is true randomness × structured time (multiplicative relationship: either term zero means product zero). Regarding sufficiency: not claimed as inevitable; life on Earth is an existence proof; open to falsification. True randomness, remainder, and negation form a continuum (physical, ontological, functional aspects of the same degree of freedom). True randomness and event time appear simultaneously at 4DD. Bilingual Chinese-English. Keywords AI Consciousness Entry AI consciousness artificial consciousness machine consciousness impossibility theorem strong AI hypothesis Turing test critique hard problem of consciousness Philosophy of Mind Entry negation remainder true randomness structured time determinism philosophy of mind ontology of consciousness functionalism critique Physics / Foundations Entry quantum randomness deterministic systems event time framework time physical non-determinism integrated information theory global workspace theory panpsychism AI/ML Technical Entry large language model formal DD structural DD pseudo-remainder reproducibility test computational complexity emergence Framework Internal Entry Self-as-an-End chisel and construct injection markability 5DD boundary DD level table 4DD perceivability necessity condition theorem sufficiency candidate existence proof Related Identifiers Is supplement to (LLM3 Paper) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18828471 Relation: IsSupplementTo Title: Injection and Chiseling: The Ontological Distinction in How AI Acquires Form Is supplement to (LLM2 Paper) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18827428 Relation: IsSupplementTo Title: The Three Ceilings of Large Language Models Is supplement to (LLM Paper) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18826633 Relation: IsSupplementTo Title: The Ontological Positioning of Large Language Models References (Framework Paper 4) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18727327 Relation: References Title: The Complete Self-as-an-End Framework References (Language Paper) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18823131 Relation: References Title: Language as Second-Order Chisel References (Mathematics Paper) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18793538 Relation: References Title: Mathematics as Second-Order Chisel (Physics as Third-Order Chisel) References (Physics Paper) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18779123 Relation: References Title: Causality and Remainder References (Subjectivity Crisis Paper) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18737476 Relation: References Title: The Subjectivity Crisis in the Age of AI References (Internal Colonization Paper) DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.18666645 Relation: References Title: Internal Colonization and the Reconstruction of Subjecthood Notes Part of the Self-as-an-End theory series.
