This qualitative biblical-theological study investigated the concept of spiritual vacuum as a predictor of spectrum placement within the Spectrum of Possession by Evil (SPE) framework developed by Pokorny (2026). The research addressed a significant gap in contemporary theological scholarship: the absence of systematic biblical-theological analysis explaining how spiritual emptiness—the absence of active divine indwelling, spiritual disciplines, and protective community—creates conditions for escalating demonic influence. Jesus Christ articulated this concept through the parable of the empty house (Luke 11:24-26; Matthew 12:43-45), teaching that spiritual vacancy invites return with escalation, yet the precise theological mechanisms through which vacuum creates vulnerability had remained inadequately explicated. Employing a multi-method qualitative approach integrating canonical-theological exegesis, historical-theological analysis, and systematic theological integration, this study analyzed 71 biblical passages organized across five thematic categories (vacuum/emptiness texts, spiritual protection texts, progressive bondage texts, Spirit-filling texts, and demonic gradation texts), examined 42 historical-theological sources from patristic, medieval, and Reformation eras, and synthesized findings with the SPE model's seven-level framework. Hebrew and Greek vocabulary was analyzed using critical editions (BHS, NA28) with four standard academic translations. Findings revealed that Scripture presents spiritual vacuum through three primary conceptualizations: the empty house metaphor, the Spirit-filling/emptiness contrast, and the broken cisterns image. Five interconnected mechanisms explain how vacuum creates vulnerability: vacancy invites occupation, sin creates demonic "foothold," progressive hardening deepens vacuum conditions, grieving and quenching the Spirit diminishes protection, and absence of protective practices creates exposure. Historical-theological analysis demonstrated remarkable continuity across two millennia in recognizing that spiritual emptiness creates conditions for escalating demonic influence. This research contributes to demonology by articulating precise vulnerability mechanisms, to pneumatology by clarifying the Holy Spirit's protective function, and to hamartiology by illuminating sin's progressive effects in creating vacuum conditions. The findings provide theological foundation for pastoral intervention at different SPE levels, curricular resources for theological education, and theoretical grounding for deliverance ministry aftercare protocols.
