Site 31WA1997 is a multi-component precontact site located on sandy Coastal Plain sediments in the Central Piedmont of North Carolina, within 24 km of the Piedmont-Coastal Plain Fall Line transition. Artifacts recovered from the site indicate Archaic, Middle-to-Late Woodland, and Historic period occupations with intact cultural strata from Archaic and Middle Woodland period occupations. Nine lithic artifacts were submitted for protein residue analysis and eight ceramic sherds were submitted for organic residue analysis via Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis.
