Site 5EP6618 is located within the Colorado Piedmont of the Great Plains physiographic region on Fort Carson’s Training Area 13. This isolated hearth/thermal feature was discovered in a large soil column that had eroded out of the cut bank of a seasonal arroyo. Radiocarbon dates from two separate pieces of charcoal recovered from the feature yielded uncalibrated dates of 3590 ± 25 BP and 3690 ± 30 BP, indicating use of this feature within the Middle Archaic period. Two sediment samples (1 and 2) were submitted for Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). One sample (3) was submitted for pollen analysis, and one sample (4) for macrofloral analysis.
