Abstract Accelerating complex systems frequently exhibit rate-induced instabilities that cannot be fully captured by quasi-static thresholds or local linear stability analysis. This preprint proposes a field-theoretic description of stability in such systems using a scalar field of critical sensitivity Ψ(x,t).
