Introduction: Sesamum indicum, primarily known as sesame, belongs to the Pedaliaceae family and contains lignans, other bioactive compounds, and biomolecules with substantial therapeutic potential. This review carefully examines the characteristics and pharmacological significance of lignans, as well as the pharmacological properties present in Sesamum indicum. Methods: A comprehensive search of reliable sources, including PubMed, book chapters, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science, was conducted to gather detailed information regarding the plant and its compounds. Results: This review demonstrates the pharmacological potential of Sesamum indicum and the various benefits of lignans based on data collected from the literature. Discussion: Numerous bioactive phytochemical compounds have been identified and isolated from different parts of Sesamum indicum, including seeds, seed oils, and the key lignan compounds. These include sugars, essential amino acids, proteins, fatty acids, triterpenes, phytosterols, phenols, anthraquinones, polyphenols, naphthoquinones, and other chemical substances. Furthermore, Sesamum indicum exhibits a range of pharmacological activities, including antimicrobial, wound-healing, reproductive, neuroprotective, hepatoprotective, anticancer, antifungal, antioxidant, cardioprotective, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects. Conclusion: This study highlights the potential of lignans and Sesamum indicum for various biological applications, emphasizing the need for further research to fully realize their therapeutic potential, particularly in healthcare. Future investigations into lignans and their complex bioactive constituents will enhance their role in drug development.
