This paper presents first a theoretical framework on the concepts of trace and archive, and in a second step an operationalization of a digital approach to historical material based on these concepts. The second part is illustrated by the practical experience of developing the digital scholarly edition Letters and Texts. Intellectual Berlin around 1800. The conclusion addresses the question of data architecture based on the confrontation of the theoretical framework and the practical experience.
