Abstract: This article examines the reconfiguration of the Korean TV drama industry prior to the launch of Netflix in Korea in 2016. Specifically, it explores how deregulation in the form of reregulation, conglomeration, and consolidation of production companies and talent agencies under neoliberal media policies has created industrial conditions conducive to Netflix’s dominance in the Korean media market. Drawing on critical media industry studies, the article explores structural transformations within the Korean TV drama industry and analyzes the power relations that shape interactions between broadcasting stations, production companies, and streaming services. While many studies have examined Netflix through the lens of imperialism and its ramifications on the Korean media industry, this article provides a more nuanced analysis of the complex operations of power within Korean media industries.
