Land Potential of Russia: Condition, Use, Preservation

The article presents an assessment of the state of land resources of the Russian Federation, gives the main characteristics of the land relations that have developed in the country, and identifies risks and negative trends in the organization of land use in various sectors of the economy. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the causes of the development of degradation processes of a significant part of agricultural lands as a result of water and wind erosion of soils, desertification and other destructive phenomena. In order to increase the efficiency of use and preservation of the countrys land potential, a set of measures has been proposed, including the development and adoption of a land policy doctrine, improvement of the land management system based on the revival of its most important institutions - forecasting and planning, land management, land monitoring, etc. The article is based on a report presented by the author at a meeting of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences on July 1, 2025.
