Li Xiyue 李西月, the founder of the Western Branch (Xipai 西派) of Internal Alchemy (neidan 內丹) during the mid-to-late Qing dynasty, explicitly identified the method of Penetrating the Chaotic Obscurity (zuan yaoming 鑽杳冥) as the primary and most challenging task in his alchemical system. However, contemporary scholarship often exhibits confusion regarding his methods of penetrating the chaotic obscurity and Unfolding the Cavities and Opening the Passes. This paper argues that what he termed penetrating the chaotic obscurity is a state achieved by cultivators after they have withdrawn their mental focus, harmonized their breath, established the Interdependence of Mind and Breath, and concentrated their Spirit within the Void. The state precipitated from this condition is what Li Xiyue’s internal alchemy theory describes as the emergence of the living Mysterious Pass (huo xuanguan 活玄關). He defined the living Mysterious Pass revealed through this practice as the Mysterious Pass within the Void (xuwu qiao 虛無竅), which serves as the Postnatal Furnace and Tripod (houtian ding 後天鼎)—the locus for the intercourse of spirit and qi. The true breath (zhenxi 真息) perceived within the state of the chaotic obscurity is gathered into this tripod, thereby generating the Primordial qi within the Postnatal Stage (houtian zhong xiantian qi 後天中先天氣). Once this qi is activated, the cavities open and the passes unlock spontaneously. Consequently, Li Xiyue’s method of penetrating the chaotic obscurity represents not only the culmination of the initial practices—such as concentrating the spirit and regulating breath—within his alchemical system, but also an essential prerequisite for initiating the Coagulation of the Jade Liquor to the Cinnabar Field (yuye jiedan 玉液結丹).
