The discovery and development of critical minerals and strategic materials will be key for the energy transition. In order to support informed decision-making, a series of national-scale mineral potential assessments are being undertaken as part of Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity to predictively model Australia’s geological potential for these critical minerals and strategic materials. This presentation will highlight results from two recent assessments for iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) and unconformity-related rare earth element mineral systems which integrate new and legacy precompetitive geoscience with data science to produce predictive models showing which parts of Australia have higher potential for mineral system formation. These models reduce the exploration search space for explorers and can inform land use decision-making. The presentation will then discuss how these assessments will contribute to a commodity prospectus which will outline Australia’s opportunity to supply critical minerals and strategic materials from both potentially new and existing resources.
