An archaeological desk-based assessment and Walkover Survey was commissioned by Glentoal Associates, on behalf of their client Stancliffe Stone Co Ltd. The study was commissioned as part of a scheme of work to be submitted to the Peak District National Park Authority to enable the dormant planning permission for Lees Cross and Endcliffe Quarries (1989 920) to be re-opened, for the extraction of dimensional stone. The desk-based assessment and walkover survey identified several features of archaeological interest inside the proposed development area. These mainly comprised structures and features relating to post-medieval quarrying. Aerial photographs also identified a possible feature of unknown date on land within the Endcliffe Quarry site. The study showed that the areas of tipping from the original planning permission had not been fully utilised, and areas of original ground surface were present. The study also highlighted the close proximity of the proposed development area to the Scheduled Ancient Monuments of Stanton Moor, a mainly prehistoric settlement and ceremonial landscape, and Hillcarr Sough, including a limekiln, shafts, trackways and spoil tips.
