The evaluation was requested in relation to the planned redevelopment of the site and comprised historical and cartographic research, along with a site visit. The specific aims are: " to assess the survival and potential significance of buried archaeological remains within the application area; and " to assess the extent of impact likely to be caused by the proposed development. The majority of the site appears to have been fields until the mid-20th-century. No archaeological finds were recorded in association with the sites development and any sub-surface deposits that may have been present are likely to have been destroyed during the construction of the college buildings. The principal area of archaeological interest within the site is the land to the south of West Block. This area was the site of the medieval St. Helens Chapel, the 18th-century grammar school, and possibly a medieval holy well. Sub-surface deposits associated with these features may survive in this area. The secondary area of archaeological interest within the site is the area to the south of the Sports Hall at Infirmary Road. The c.1901 Eventide development occupied this area until the mid-1970s and the relative lack of redevelopment in this area suggests that sub-surface remains associated with Eventide may be present Although previously unknown archaeological deposits cannot be ruled out, the remainder of the site is likely to be of low archaeological potential.
