An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken on land near Hall Lane, Staveley, prior to submission of a planning application to extend an adjacent waste site. A site walk-over and documentary search were carried out, to establish the known and potential archaeology in the area. Much of the site has been developed in the past, and/or subject to levelling and dumping. Although no buildings are present today, a row of terraced houses, probably the last of a series of workers accommodation associated with the Staveley works, was built some time between 1898 and 1916. Structures also thought to be associated with the works were identified on the Tithe map of AD1841, at the south-western boundary of the application area. Although much of the application area has been subject to previous construction and demolition, the investigation of some of the building foundations (if present) would be of interest. There are two fields which appear only to have been subject to ploughing activity in the past.
