ARCUS were commissioned to carry out an archaeological watching brief during building works by Riverdale Country Homes Ltd at Milloridge Farm, Castleton, Derbyshire (SK 1503 8309). The area of works is adjacent to the historic core of Castleton, and just outside the line of the Medieval defences. Odin mine nearby is also reputed to have been worked possibly as early as the Roman period. The groundworks consisted of the removal of a thick layer of hardcore which exposed a natural layer with the potential to retain archaeologically cut features and/or historic structure foundations. Archaeological supervision was required in order that any exposed archaeological remains were recorded before destruction. The remains of a domestic drain feature, a deposit from an industrial process and three modern disposal pits for farm animals were recorded. The industrial residue has been dated through cultural artefacts to early-mid 19 century. were 20 century in date.
