Sustainable healthcare has emerged as a critical global priority in response to rising healthcare costs, environmental degradation, unequal access to medical services, and the increasing burden of non-communicable and lifestyle-related diseases. Traditional systems of medicine, particularly Ayurveda, offer a holistic, preventive, and resource-efficient approach that aligns closely with the principles of sustainability. Ayurveda, one of the world's oldest medical systems originating in India, emphasizes balance between body, mind, environment, and lifestyle, making it inherently compatible with sustainable healthcare models. This research paper explores the role of Ayurveda in strengthening sustainable healthcare systems by examining its preventive orientation, low ecological footprint, community-based applicability, and patient-centered philosophy. The study adopts a mixed-method approach combining secondary literature review with primary data collected through structured questionnaires administered to healthcare consumers and practitioners. The research evaluates public perception, accessibility, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact of Ayurvedic healthcare in comparison to conventional biomedical systems. The findings indicate that Ayurveda contributes significantly to sustainability through its emphasis on disease prevention, use of natural and locally sourced medicines, reduced dependency on energy-intensive technologies, and promotion of healthy lifestyles. Moreover, Ayurvedic practices encourage self-care, thereby reducing long-term healthcare costs and pressure on tertiary medical facilities. Despite its advantages, challenges such as lack of standardization, limited scientific validation in some areas, and integration barriers with modern healthcare systems remain. The study concludes that Ayurveda has strong potential to complement modern healthcare in achieving sustainable development goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). Strategic policy support, scientific research, ethical commercialization, and integrative healthcare models are essential to harness Ayurveda's full potential in building resilient and sustainable healthcare systems.
