Abstract

This study addresses the question of whether the 15th-19th-century Portuguese/Spanish phonemic and allophonic distinctions between the alveolar rhotic flap /ɾ/ and the alveolar rhotic trill /r/ are retained in a number of Iberian-based creole languages and whether this is predictable. It is argued that, to some extent, the retention can be predicted.
