“About Whom Is Our Discourse”: New Data on λόγος in Hebrews 4:13

Abstract: The most common translation of λόγος in Heb 4:13 is “account.” However, a few scholars have suggested that λόγος refers to the author’s discourse. In this article, I present new evidence that supports the latter interpretation. First, I survey the interpretive options. Second, I present new examples of λόγος as part of a discourse idiom in Greek literature. Third, I answer several objections to the discourse view. Fourth and finally, I summarize the findings and gesture to some implications for Hebrews. The phrase πρὸς ὃν ἡμῖν ὁ λόγος in Heb 4:13 should be translated as something like “about whom is our discourse” or “von dem reden wir.”
