The changes in the Russian agro-industrial complex that have taken place during the period of market reforms, as well as the ongoing processes of urbanization, entail more global changes in rural life in general. Agriculture, while remaining the most important branch of the rural economy, is no longer considered as the only sphere of employment of rural residents. Socio-demographic factors related to the size of the population, its structure and dynamics of its change, migration processes, accessibility of educational and medical institutions have a significant impact on ensuring the sustainable development of the rural economy. In turn, the formation of socio-demographic factors largely depends on the characteristics of rural settlement in a particular region of the country. The present work is devoted to substantiating the need to take into account the manifestations of these features.
