Academic libraries play a crucial role in supporting teaching, learning, research, and innovation within higher education institutions. In the context of India’s growing emphasis on knowledge creation and research productivity, academic libraries have evolved from traditional repositories of books to dynamic information centers that facilitate access to a wide range of scholarly resources. The primary objective of this article is to examine the role of academic libraries in promoting research and innovation in India. The study adopts a conceptual and descriptive approach based on secondary sources such as books, research articles, policy documents, and reports related to library and information science. The paper highlights how academic libraries contribute to research activities by providing access to print and digital resources, research databases, institutional repositories, and information literacy programs. It also discusses the importance of research support services, including reference assistance, citation guidance, plagiarism awareness, and digital resource training for students and scholars. Furthermore, the article explores the role of academic libraries in encouraging collaborative learning, interdisciplinary research, and innovation through digital platforms and knowledge-sharing initiatives. Despite several challenges such as limited funding, technological gaps, and the need for skilled professionals, academic libraries continue to play a vital role in strengthening the research ecosystem in India and supporting academic excellence.
