Elitzur's Theorem and the Fano Higgs Mechanism: Why the Standard Spontaneous Breaking Narrative Is Inconsistent and How the Fano λ = 4 Condensation Resolves It Paper LXVI of the Brane-Bulk Octonionic Series

Abstract

Elitzur's theorem (1975) states that the expectation value of any gauge non-invariant observable must vanish in the thermodynamic limit: ⟨O⟩= 0 for any O transforming non-trivially under local gauge symmetry. The conventional description of the Higgs mechanism as spontaneous breaking of SU(2)L × U(1)Y gauge symmetry to U(1)EM with a non-zero Higgs vacuum expectation value ⟨ϕ⟩= v/ √ 2 is therefore in direct conict with Elitzur's theorem: the Higgs doublet ϕ transforms under SU(2)L, making ⟨ϕ⟩identically zero by the theorem. The resolution in the literature (Fröhlich- Morchio-Strocchi mechanism, 1981) is that the physical particles correspond to gauge- invariant composite operators, not the elementary gauge non-invariant elds. We show that the brane-bulk octonionic framework implements this resolution automatically and uniquely, with no additional assumptions. The key results: (1) The Gauge Zero-Energy Theorem (Paper LIX) establishes that SU(2)L automorphisms cost zero energy and cannot be broken SU(2)L is intact at all energy scales, consistent with Elitzur's theorem. (2) What actually occurs at the electroweak scale v = 246 GeV is not symmetry breaking but the freezing of the λ = 4 Fano eigenmode (the EW Freezing Theorem of Papers III/IV): the brane fabric's temporal evolution halts, locking the λ = 4 mode into its minimum-energy conguration. (3) This condensation scale v is gauge-invariant it is derived from λH = 1/(2λ2) = 1/8 (a Fano eigenvalue, carrying no gauge labels) and mH (the gauge-invariant propagator pole mass of Paper LXIII). (4) The W and Z boson masses arise from the gauge-invariant overlap between the frozen λ = 4 Fano condensate and the SU(2)L × U(1)Y automorphism zero-modes the same structure as the Fröhlich-Morchio-Strocchi (FMS) mechanism, but derived from rst principles. (5) The Z3 global symmetry of the generation structure (Paper LVI) does break at the EW scale global symmetry breaking is not prohibited by Elitzur's theorem and this provides the physical order parameter for the EW transition. The photon remains massless because the λ = 0 Fano zero-mode (electromagnetic) can never freeze: it is the constant eigenmode of the Fano Laplacian, always in the unbroken ground state.
