Two portions of the proposed development area required archaeological evaluation and the remaining portion of the Access Road will be subject to an archaeological watching brief at a later stage which will be reported separately. This stage of works consisted of an intrusive evaluation of four trenches providing an 8% sample of the available ground across the two areas. The trenches targeted the sites of two buildings identified on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of 1867. No in situ remains from the original buildings were identified. The building in Plot 2 appeared to have been fully demolished with the demolition material spread throughout the topsoil, while the one within the Access Road appeared to have been reworked into an element of the more recent garden. Two walls recorded during the works appeared to be later, although a revetment wall in the Access Road sits on the same alignment as the original building wall and may contain reused material. A small concentration of stones exposed in a trench within the Access Road could represent disturbed remains so this area is recommended as being included within the later watching brief.
