ARCUS were commissioned by Severn Trent Water to conduct a watching brief on the line of proposed sewer improvement works at Ashby South Grange, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. Three trial holes were undertaken under archaeological observation on the route of the proposed new sewer. No archaeological remains were recovered in any of the trial holes but the area of previous disturbance by a former water works was identified on the southern part of the route and the natural soils sequence was identified along the northern part of the route. In general there appeared to be little archaeological potential based on the observations of the trial holes. However, due to the wide gaps between the trial holes it is impossible to exclude the possibility that archaeological deposits could be present in the areas that were not examined.
