Domestication of the United Nations Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities

The purpose of this submission is to provide an overview of important concerns relating to persons with disabilities (PWD) that the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) considers pertinent for the further domestication of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) into South African law. Lord and Stein identify three areas where the UNCRPD may have an immediate national effect: * the expressive value of acknowledging disability-based human rights * the impact of requiring States Parties to reflect upon and engage with domestic-level disability laws and policies; and * advances in social integration by persons with disabilities that will be facilitated through the UNCRPD's inclusive development mandate.
