Abstract This article presents a full account of the life of Colonel John Romsey (1639–1689). This means bringing together three periods. His military career in the 1660s has already been documented, but the article offers new evidence of his previously undocumented time at Bristol in the 1670s. Regarding his work as an agent of Shaftesbury and Rye House Plotter in the 1680s it questions the widespread interpretation of his turning king’s evidence. And as epilogue, it discusses his newly discovered will, which throws light on his marriage to Lady Ann Smythe. Taken all together they constitute a consistent picture of an honourable soldier.
