Carbon sequestration has gained significant interest due to the nation’s growing energy needs and resulting carbon dioxide emissions. Indiana has deep bedrock reservoirs, a history of significant industrial emissions, and an evolving regulatory environment, making it a key region for carbon sequestration initiatives. This StoryMap aims to summarize the potential for Indiana’s bedrock to sequester carbon dioxide and to provide an overview of geological sequestration, including its history, regulatory oversight, and associated hazards. Our research has shown that the state’s Cambrian- and Ordovician-age bedrock units are potentially viable storage systems for commercial-scale geological carbon sequestration, but further societal determinations will need to be addressed by communities, regulators, and operators.
