Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) are widely adopted in school-level assessments due to their efficiency, objectivity, and suitability for large-scale evaluation. The effectiveness of such questions, however, depends significantly on the quality of their construction. This study explores key principles of MCQ design by combining foundational psychometric concepts—such as item difficulty, discrimination power, and distractor functionality—with practical insights drawn from field-based assessment experiences. The study follows a descriptive and analytical framework to examine commonly observed shortcomings in MCQ construction and illustrates these with applied examples. A sample item analysis is also included to demonstrate how statistical indicators can be used for evaluating and refining assessment items. The findings suggest that questions with balanced difficulty levels and well-designed distractors are more effective in differentiating learner performance. Additionally, factors such as clarity of the question stem, alignment with intended learning outcomes, and systematic review processes play a crucial role in maintaining the validity and reliability of assessments. The study provides practical recommendations for improving MCQ quality and highlights the importance of integrating data-driven practices in school-level assessment systems.
