In this article, the author examines the features of the legal regulation of information circulation in the activities of institutions and bodies of the penal system of the Russian Federation. Special attention is paid to the circulation of information containing personal data of individuals convicted of crimes, as well as those suspected and accused of committing crimes. From the perspective of the regulatory framework for the circulation of departmental information, the content of Order No. 417 of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia dated June 23, 2020, "On the Processing of Personal Data in the Penal System of the Russian Federation," as the main act on this topic, is analyzed. The article proposes ways to improve the procedural framework for handling information in the activities of institutions and bodies of the Russian Federation's penal system by clarifying relevant regulatory provisions.
