Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a non-invasive method for evaluating body composition by measuring the electrical impedance of biological tissues. It operates on principles involving Cole impedance modeling, Cole-Cole curves, and Hanai’s mixture theory, enabling the estimation of intracellular water (ICW) and extracellular water (ECW). These days, numerous studies have validated the effectiveness of BIA for diagnosing and monitoring lymphedema, demonstrating that BIA detects subclinical lymphedema earlier than conventional methods, thus facilitating timely interventions. These research findings suggest that BIA could serve as a useful tool for diagnosing lymphedema. However, there are still many limitations before it can be established as a standard diagnostic method. Future developments should focus on standardizing clinical guidelines, enhancing device accessibility, and refining analytic models through artificial intelligence, ultimately improving individualized patient management and outcomes in lymphedema and beyond.
