Abstract Sustainable development has become one of the most significant global concerns of the twenty first century. Environmental degradation, climate change, economic inequality, and social injustice require long – term solutions that balance development with environmental protection. Higher education institutions play an essential role in promoting sustainable development by generating knowledge, conducting research, and preparing responsible citizens. Universities contribute to sustainability through education, innovation, community engagement, and policy influence. This paper examines the relationship between higher education and sustainable development, emphasizing the importance of integrating sustainability into teaching, research and institutional practices. This study also highlights challenges faced by higher education institution and suggests strategies for strengthening their contribution to sustainable development.
