In order to investigate the archaeological potential of a proposed residential development site at Land south of Thompsons Meadow, Guilden Morden, Cambridgeshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned to undertake a field evaluation by trial trenching. Ten trenches were excavated across the site, six trenches were 50m in length, and four measured 25m long. Ten features were encountered across the site (6 linears and 4 pits), located in trenches 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 9. Four of those features appear to date from the Late Iron Age or Early Roman periods, whilst the remaining features could not be dated. No archaeological features, finds or deposits were revealed in trenches 4, 8 and 10. No evidence for any features or deposits dating from other periods was recorded. On the basis of the results of the evaluation, the risk that the proposed development might have a negative impact on remains of archaeological significance may be considered to be Moderate for Iron Age and Roman, and given the proximity of the site to known early Saxon burials, Moderate for the Saxon period. The risk is considered to be Low for all other periods.
