The detailed magnetic survey was carried out using a SENSYS MAGNETO MX V3 6 channel cart-based system. The instrument has 6 fluxgate gradiometers spaced 0.5m apart with readings recorded at 20Hz which equates to a survey resolution of 0.5m by 0.15m. Several previous surveys have been undertaken within the surrounding vicinity, including on Stancombe Down, just to the east of the present survey area, where geophysical anomalies relating to former structural remains were located where a Roman villa was recorded in 1887. The results of the present survey indicate a continuation of the rectilinear enclosures, linear ditches, pits and a former trackway previously identified within the villa field. To the north-west there appears to be a curvilinear enclosure that has been truncated by modern services while further west and north-west are a number of linear features relating boundaries associated with a widespread field system. Numerous anomalies relating to naturally formed solution features and tree-throw pits have also been located. A number of pit-like anomalies can be seen in the vicinity of the location of a former chalk pit where a number of Roman burials were uncovered in 1870. However, it is not possible to determine if they relate to further burials or if they have archaeological potential.
