Between March and November 2024, a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Humber Field Archaeology during the construction an all-weather football pitch with associated grassed area, access, car park and lighting on land adjacent to the sports field, Scawby Road, Broughton, North Lincolnshire. Examination of the ground testing pits in March recorded the general thickness of the topsoil across the site as it exposed the underlying post-glacial natural in the bases of the small excavations. Monitoring of the excavation of an access apron at the centre north of the site in July also recorded post-glacial natural deposits underneath the topsoil. During November, monitoring was undertaken during the stripping of the topsoil along the west to east access road, car park and football field. This large scheme of excavation also revealed the same sequence of deposits underlying the topsoil across the site - that of a mid to dark orange brown sand and weathered bedrock. No archaeological features or deposits were identified or recorded during this current programme of work. 4.1.1 The programme of archaeological monitoring and recording at the development site did not record any archaeological activity. 4.1.2 The only deposits exposed were naturally occurring in origin: the topsoil (101), an underlying post-glacial sand deposit (102) and the upper elements of the weathered bedrock (103). 4.1.3 The results suggest that there is likely no archaeological activity in the remainder of the field also. This result proves interesting as the site is located quite high in terms of the surrounding topography. With the area being very well drained due to the underlying sands and weathered bedrock, the area of the site would have been eminently suitable for human occupation. However, a programme of archaeological trial trenching immediately west of the site on the opposite side of Scawby Road also did not record any archaeological features or deposits (Lane, 2021).
