A scoping review was conducted to characterize published Philippine mental health research from 1990 to 2024. Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines for scoping reviews, research questions related to the characteristics of mental health research involving Filipinos were defined. Eligible studies were peer-reviewed publications involving Filipino individuals, communities, or systems, published between 1990 and 2024 in English or Filipino. Primary and supplementary searches of major international digital databases and manual searches of Filipino publications were undertaken. Applying predetermined screening criteria, 1942 published works were selected for review. All selected works were coded for characteristics of the sample population, methodology, intervention, and mental health concepts of interest. The growth in specific areas of research was observed, while limitations related to the representativeness of the samples, the quality of the research designs and methods, the narrow range of concepts studied, and the lack of cultural contextualization were also noted. The results of the scoping review were discussed in terms of prospects for strengthening mental health research in the Philippines.
