VAFB-1983-15: Report on Archaeological Survey of a Proposed Water Systems on Sudden Ranch Lease; Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA

This document is a Section 106 report discussing an archaeological survey of four separate areas on the Sudden Ranch Lease on Vandenberg Air Force Base. The proposed project consists of shallow buried pipelines and livestock watering troughs in four separate areas designated A, B, C, and D (see Maps 1 - 4). A series of one-inch PVC pipelines will be buried at a depth of about 18 inches over a total distance of approximately three miles. In addition to the pipelines, five locations will be subjected to shallow grading for construction of livestock watering troughs. Since these locations are already relatively level, grading should reach a depth of no more than 18 inches and cover an area of no more than about 10 x 20 feet. The study revealed that no previously unrecorded archaeological sites are visible along the ground surface. Seven previously recorded sites are present in the immediate vicinity of the project areas. Due to the relatively minor subsurface impact of the proposed project and a record of previous disturbance throughout most of the project areas, no recommendation is made for subsurface archaeological testing in advance of construction. Recommended mitigation measures include that determination of actual pipeline routes and trough locations in sensitive areas be made in consultation with archaeologists along with monitoring of construction activities.
